![]() Ask many students from Ghana to Canada and across the world and about seventy percent of students surveyed would tell you that ‘they hate Mathematics as a subject!’ Why? Even among teachers, you would hear one say, “Math was not my favorite subject at school. They make learning fun! However, the learning of Mathematics is no fun to many students. ![]() They become useful tools for facilitating learning in the classroom. Such devices when appropriately guided and directed (supervised) by a trained teacher, are very effective tools for learning. Children are easily attracted to computers and other technological devices which provide games. However, the big question is: how equitable are the technological resources in our homes around the world? Even the highly industrialized/advanced countries like Canada CANNOT BOAST OF COMPUTER AND INTERNET IN EVERY HOME! What do we do as parents stuck with our children at home during these stressful times? How do parents in their own small way help their children to learn how to do Math-the most dread but necessary of all school subjects?Īs a professional teacher, I would like to point out here that, technology in the teaching of Math as a subject in our schools has become very essential in today’s world. Virtual learning and google classrooms are being considered. Ministries of Education and School Boards are being forced to look for ways and means to provide distant education to their numerous students now confined to their homes. News reports from all over the world daily point to the distress that this deadly virus has unleashed on the formal educational system everywhere. I have been prompted to revisit the issue of helping our children to learn Mathematics at home as the result of unprecedented closure of schools in many parts of the world due to the devastating threat of the deadly virus known as Coronavirus (COVID-19) in recent times. Understanding and using mathematics to make decisions and to take action builds confidence and joy!’ Understanding and knowing how to do mathematics makes our day-to-day lives easier.
